Fall Seeding
Ideal weather conditions: cool, more rain, warmer ground temps.
Fewer weed seeds germinating
Emulates natural re-seeding that occurs in nature
The best time to seed is from late August to mid-late September. Unfortunately, most people don’t think about seeding their lawns in the fall after drought and damaged areas have been created throughout the summer. Instead, most people think about seeding their lawns in the spring, which is not an effective time to get consistent results from seeding.
Fall is an ideal time to seed because of better weather conditions. In the spring, the soil temperature is colder then it is in the fall. Therefore, seed that is introduced takes longer to develop into a mature plant. Fall is more predictable for adequate moisture levels compared to spring conditions, which are variable and cannot necessarily guarantee adequate moisture to establish the new grasses. Temperatures in the spring often rise rapidly (as soon as late April and early May). This rapid increase in temperatures under low moisture conditions and full sun can quickly stunt and even kill new grass seedlings, requiring the entire process to be redone in the fall. Seeds and young plants are much more vulnerable to injury from crabgrass and weed controls in the spring. Delaying or skipping the spring crabgrass controls can end up causing just as much damage as if you hadn’t seeded at all. If your lawn has spots of bare soil, dead grass, or dry spots, then you should seed in the fall.
Spot Seeding Repairs Lawn
Spot seeding is an option that is used when making minor lawn repairs. It literally means “seeding spots,” and can be applied to a scar from insect or disease activity. Spot seeding is only applied to a small area that does not require the use of a slice seeder. The soil can be loosened by using a steel rake, adding the appropriate seed blend, and working in the seed.
Fall Fertilizing
Fall fertilization is the key to prolonging fall color and promoting early springs recovery of lawns. It also helps to produce a dense turf which resists winter weeds. Fertilizers used in the fall should be high in nitrogen and potassium and low in phosphorus. Grass fertilized in the fall with nitrogen and potassium has shown greater survival during winter months and faster spring recovery.
Weed problems? Fall is also the ideal time to apply a weed feed. You will start spring with a lush, green and weed-free lawn.
